Protect Yourself Against SoundCloud Takedowns

A few weeks ago I read about SoundCloud starting its take down campaign on a massive scale, targeting both casual users and big name acts alike (Knife Party being one of them). I've had a few take downs in the past due to some remixes and mix tapes that I've made in the five years that I've been on the music sharing platform, so I didn't think much of it because I just assumed it was business as usual. Big mistake...
I got a text message from a promoter just a single day after I read about the take down campaign.
"I have a client wants to hear your remix but they can't access your SoundCloud. Where else can we check it out?"
I expected the worst, and I was right: My account had been deleted along with all the music I uploaded for the last half decade! It really couldn't have come at a worse time (is there ever a good time?), because I was about to start promoting my EP of all-original music which was going to rely heavily on using SoundCloud as my playback and social hub, and instead I was left with nothing.
So I contacted support and they told me that they have a "three strikes and you're out" rule regarding takedowns. Sadly, I wasn't aware of that until my account was removed, since take downs in the past didn't lead to obvious penalties other than your music disappearing from your profile.
So in order that you might save yourself from all the trouble I went through and learn from my mistakes, here is my advice to anyone who wasn't to carry on using SoundCloud:

My Song Was Played 168 Million Times on Pandora. I Received $4,000

By law, we have to let any business use our songs that asks, so long as they agree to pay a rate that, more often than not, was not set in a free market. We don’t have a choice. As such, we have no power to protect the value of the music we create.
The abhorrently low rates songwriters are paid by streaming services—enabled by outdated federal regulations—are yet another indication our work is being devalued in today’s marketplace.
Consider the fact that it takes roughly one million spins on Pandora for a songwriter to earn just $90. Avicii’s release “Wake Me Up!” that I co-wrote and sing, for example, was the most streamed song in Spotify history and the 13th most played song on Pandora since its release in 2013, with more than 168 million streams in the US. And yet, that yielded only $12,359 in Pandora domestic royalties— which were then split among three songwriters and our publishers.
In return for co-writing a major hit song, I’ve earned less than $4,000 domestically from the largest digital music service.
If that’s what’s now considered a streaming “success story,” is it any wonder that so many songwriters are now struggling to make ends meet?

As a sponsored Stanton DJ and the youngest graduate of Jam Master Jay's Scratch Academy in Los Angeles, DJ Young 1 has spun her magic at a diverse range of venues, including the San Francisco Supper Club, The Palms (LA), Leige (Oakland) and The New Parish (Oakland). She has also lent her talents to special performances for San Francisco Pride, DJ Spark’s Birthday Bash, the WNBA Los Angeles Sparks MVP Picnic, Wilder’s Preparatory Academy Charter School Harvest Festival, La Ballona Elementary School Fall Festival and Gibson Beverly Hills, showcasing the SCS4.DJ and the Cerwin Vega P Series! She also showcased the SCS4.DJ and the STR8.150 turntables at the 2013 NAMM convention in Anaheim. Her most recent work includes spinning as a guest dj for Celebrity, Anthony Anderson's son's birthday party and devoting her time spinning at the 2013 HER HRC Celebration at The Robertson in West Hollywood as well as the HRC National Gala Event in Washington DC. She has also performed as a finalist on America's Got Talent Season 8 and was the guest dj for The Queen Latifah Show. Her most highest honor was spinning as a guest dj for the 2014 White House Easter Egg Roll where she had an opportunity to meet President Obama and the First Lady.
